After having our breakfast at a suitable place along the route, we head towards the Ephesus Ancient City located in Selçuk district. Selçuk came under the control of the Aydınoğulları Beylik in 1304 and was annexed to the Ottoman Empire in 1426. In 1914, its name was changed from Ayasuluk to Selçuk and it has become one of the most important settlements of Ancient Times. Today, many structures bearing traces of history still stand in Selçuk.
This significant center, which attracts attention not just from Turkey but from the entire world, is the Ephesus Ancient City, the pearl of İzmir. Ephesus has hosted various civilizations throughout history due to its importance as a major port city between east and west. Among these civilizations are the Romans, Byzantines, Ottoman Empire, and various Anatolian principalities. Some of the visitable places in Ephesus include: the Temple of Artemis, the first marble temple in the world, the Celsus Library, known as the third largest library of the Ancient World, the impressive Ephesus Ancient Theatre, the Agora which was the city square, the Domitian Temple dedicated to Roman Emperor Domitian, the Kuretes Street named after the priests who guarded the sacred fire, and the Heracles Gate adorned with Heracles reliefs. After our tour of the ancient city, we proceed to the House of Virgin Mary located at the foothills of Bülbül Mountain. According to legend, after Jesus’ death, Saint John brought Virgin Mary to Ephesus. It was discovered in 1891 based on the visions of German nun A. Katharina Emmerich, through the research of Lazarists priests, that this was the place where Virgin Mary spent her last days. This cruciform and domed structure has been restored to its present state.
After visiting this sacred site, which holds great significance for the Christian world, we take a lunch break in Selçuk. After our meal, we head to Şirince, famous for its wines and stone houses, with a history dating back to the 5th century BC, which developed in the 19th century through fig exports. This village, which took its current name after the population exchange, still features two churches from the Greek period and many houses from that era standing tall. In Şirince, no house blocks the view of another. While wandering here, you can feel the historical texture closely with the cellars, shops selling handicrafts, and also have the opportunity to taste the locally made elderflower syrup, regional wines, olive oils, and soaps. After a short tour around with our guide, we will give free time. Following our visit to Şirince, we head towards Kuşadası, which was incorporated into the Ottoman lands in 1413 during the reign of Mehmed I (Çelebi). From this date onward, the city was fully under Turkish control and enriched with many Ottoman architectural works.
Among the most important surviving structures are the Caravanserai and the walls surrounding Kuşadası, both built by Mehmet Pasha. After learning about Kuşadası with the help of our guide, we have free time to explore the surroundings and have dinner before we start our way back. Looking forward to seeing you on the next Kyzikos Travel tour…
